Parent Champion

Role Purpose

To engage with the local community on various health and well-being initiatives, including working with health services, schools, local authorities, and the Families Together Team. Your role will help to promote public health topics such as current important health initiatives for children and families, and to support the team at events. You will be the voice of the community.

Tasks

  • Speaking to people you know within your community, which may include schools, mosques, playgroups, GP surgeries, supermarkets, and libraries, to raise awareness about public health initiatives.
  • Sharing relevant information with target groups through communication channels such as leaflets, posters, social media, and in-person presentations.
  • Promoting health initiatives, current health topics for children and families, and to support the team at events.
  • Identifying individuals willing to share their stories and experiences to inspire and support others.
  • Offering practical support to people, such as directing them to services or providing information on how to access them.
  • Reporting any safeguarding concerns to ensure community safety.
  • Collecting and reporting relevant data about your engagement activities to contribute to monitoring reports.
  • Meeting up regularly with our Communities Team and Champions to share stories, findings, and insights from your outreach activities.

You can carry out this role if you are 18 years or older. We welcome people with the following qualities:

  • Ability to follow health and safety procedures
  • People who can speak community languages
  • Those representing the diverse communities of the area, including individuals with disabilities, those with caring responsibilities, and people from Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic backgrounds
  • Individuals living or working in the Kirklees area
  • Anyone with an interest in public health, health inequalities, children and families and community development work.

Support for Volunteers

  • Induction and mandatory training for the role, including safeguarding and current public health topics.
  • Access to online and in-person safeguarding training.
  • Regular support from our team via phone calls, emails and meetings.
  • Travel expenses are reimbursed.
  • Support with accessing IT to complete online training.
  • Invites to social events throughout the year.

Volunteer Expectations

As a Parent Champion Volunteer, we expect you:

  • To carry out your volunteering responsibilities to the best of your ability, letting us know if you need any help.
  • To attend in-person safeguarding training and complete online safeguarding training.
  • To commit to volunteering as a Parent Champion for 6 months or longer.
  • To be reliable and punctual; if unable to attend, contact us with as much notice as possible.
  • To respect confidentiality and maintain impartiality.
  • To understand the importance of safeguarding policies and procedures and know the relevant people to report any concerns to.
  • To adhere to Fresh Futures’ zero discriminatory policy
  • To treat people with respect, being fair, honest, and considerate.
  • To respect our policies and procedures as shared with you at Induction and in the Volunteer Handbook
  • To reply to our communications with good time or let us know if you will be unable to answer calls/emails for a significant period of time.
  • To accept responsibility for your actions.
  • To observe all health and safety measures put in place for your safety and the safety of others.
  • Not to smoke, drink alcohol or use illegal drugs while volunteering or prior to volunteering.
