Brian Jackson College has been Praised by Ofsted for Supporting Young People to Succeed

Brian Jackson College, part of Fresh Futures, has received a highly positive Ofsted inspection, with inspectors highlighting its strong safeguarding culture, inclusive environment and commitment to helping young people achieve positive futures.

The Kirklees-based alternative education provider, which supports young people aged 13 to 18, was praised for creating a safe and welcoming environment where pupils feel valued, supported and able to flourish. Ofsted found that safeguarding arrangements at the college are effective, describing an “open and positive culture” that helps pupils feel safe and confident.

Inspectors recognised the college’s success in supporting young people who may have struggled in mainstream education, noting that pupils make positive progress from their starting points, develop confidence and resilience, and achieve well academically, particularly in communication, language and mathematics.

The report also highlighted the personalised support available to learners, including mentoring, tailored learning pathways and daily guidance, helping them re-engage with education and build the skills needed for future success.

Preparing Young People for the Future

A key strength identified by inspectors was the college’s focus on equipping pupils with practical skills and real-world experience.

Students benefit from opportunities including work experience with local employers, vocational learning in areas such as construction and motor vehicle studies, and the chance to gain industry-recognised qualifications, including health and safety certifications.

This approach helps young people leave the college with the confidence, skills and experience needed to progress into employment, apprenticeships or further education. Crucial when we recognised that nationally too many young people are leaving education and becoming NEET.

A Positive and Respectful Environment

Ofsted found that relationships between staff and pupils are characterised by mutual respect and support, contributing to a positive culture across the college. Inspectors noted that bullying is rare and not tolerated, and that pupils feel safe, included and respected.

The report also recognised improvements in attendance, highlighting the work leaders undertake with families to help overcome barriers to learning and encourage young people to re-engage with education.

Strong Leadership and a Commitment to Improvement

Inspectors praised the clear vision and ambition of college leaders, along with the effectiveness of governance and the organisation’s commitment to staff wellbeing and professional development. All independent school standards were met during the inspection.

The college’s wider focus on personal development was also recognised, with pupils benefiting from mentoring, counselling, enrichment activities, leadership opportunities and careers education from an early stage. Inspectors concluded that this support helps young people to do good by excellent even with personal challenges and strong personal growth.

Fresh Futures Welcomes the Findings

Mark Farmer, Chief Executive of Fresh Futures, said:

“We are incredibly proud that Ofsted has recognised the dedication of our staff and the excellent progress and commitment to making a positive future for our pupils and their dedication to the journey they have taken. This report reflects our commitment to providing a safe, inclusive environment where every young person can thrive and build a strong foundation for future success.”

Fresh Futures is a West Yorkshire-based charity that works with children, young people and families through education, skills development and community support programmes. The organisation says the inspection outcome reinforces its commitment to helping young people develop the confidence, resilience and determination to fulfil their potential. Brian Jackson College is one of the many services delivered by the charity to help support young people from across West Yorkshire.

Celebrating our incredible staff achieving an Adult Student of the Year award!

At Fresh Futures, we are passionate about supporting growth – not only in the young people we work with, but within our own team too.

That’s why we’re delighted to celebrate Deonne, our young adults engagement officer, who has been recognised with the Adult Student of the Year Award for her achievements in Coaching and Mentoring from Calderdale College.

As the lead of elevate, Deonne is dedicated to helping young people realise their potential. Through her work, she empowers young people to build confidence, develop skills, overcome challenges, and take meaningful steps towards their future.

Already an inspiring mentor and advocate for young people, Deonne chose to further strengthen her skills through a Coaching and Mentoring programme. The course focused on supporting personal development, improving performance, and helping individuals identify and achieve their goals.

Her award is a testament to the dedication she brings to both her own development and the support she provides to others. The skills gained through the course will further enhance the incredible work she is already doing through elevate, creating even more opportunities for young people to thrive. Whilst also being an incredible role model.

Congratulations, Deonne! Your passion, commitment, and belief in young people make a real difference every day, and we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate your success. 🌟

Chair Yoga for our Volunteer Thank-You event!

At Fresh Futures, Volunteers’ Week gave us the perfect opportunity to come together and celebrate the incredible people who make so much of our work possible.

As a small token of our appreciation, we were delighted to host a special event dedicated entirely to our volunteers – a chance to say thank you, spend time together, and reflect on the difference they make every day.

We began the event with a relaxing and enjoyable chair yoga session, led by a fantastic instructor who guided everyone through gentle movements and stretches. It was a lovely way to unwind, connect, and take a well-earned moment for wellbeing.

Afterwards, volunteers enjoyed a light lunch, giving everyone time to chat, share experiences, and strengthen the sense of community that sits at the heart of Fresh Futures.

A highlight of the event was the screening of a special thank-you video, featuring messages from our Chair of Trustees and CEO. The video was created to recognise the dedication, compassion, and impact of our volunteers – reminding them just how valued they are, and how vital their contributions are to our work with young people and families across Kirklees.

Our volunteers truly are the backbone of Fresh Futures. Whether they’re supporting programmes, offering a listening ear, or helping behind the scenes, their time and energy create real, lasting change.

To every one of our volunteers: thank you. Your passion, generosity, and commitment inspire us every day, and we are so grateful to have you as part of the Fresh Futures community.

Our Vibrant Garden Transformation is Complete!

Garden

What was once an underused outdoor area is now a vibrant, welcoming garden, full of colour, creativity and purpose. Walking through the space today, you can see the care that went into every detail – from the freshly planted beds that will bloom in the coming months to the painted birdhouses, each one uniquely decorated and proudly displayed.

Already, the children have been getting stuck in, experimenting, playing and exploring the space in their own way. New play features, including mud kitchens funded by kindly provided by TRU.

This garden will play an important role across many of our services here at Fresh Futures.

For children, it will be a place of adventure and imagination. Whether it’s digging in the soil, creating games or using the mud kitchens, children will be able to learn through play in a safe, outdoor environment.

For families accessing our Stay & Play Crèche, the garden will offer a calm and engaging space where younger children can explore textures, colours and nature – supporting early development while enjoying fresh air and freedom.

elevate will also benefit from the space as somewhere to unwind, reflect and connect. Outdoor environments can have a powerful impact on mental wellbeing, offering a break from daily pressures and a chance to slow down. The garden will also be a welcoming space for others who use the building – from staff to visiting partners – giving everyone the opportunity to step outside, recharge and enjoy a calming environment.

This transformation would not have been possible without the generosity and support of our partners.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Cummins, whose funding made the transformation possible, including the addition of the swinging bench that will become a central feature of the space.

We are also incredibly grateful to TRU for funding the children’s play equipment, including the mud kitchens, which will bring so much joy, creativity and hands-on learning to the garden.

Their contributions have helped create a space that will benefit our community not just today, but for many months and years to come.

As we move into the warmer months, the garden will continue to grow and evolve. Flowers will bloom, plants will flourish, and, most importantly, the space will be filled with life – children playing, young people connecting, and families enjoying time together.

As the seasons change, the garden will also begin to provide fresh produce grown right on site. From strawberries, melons and pumpkins to herbs like mint and sage, the space will offer hands-on opportunities for children and young people to learn about growing their own food. Whether it’s planting seeds, watching something grow or tasting what they’ve helped nurture, this adds another layer of learning, creativity and connection to nature – bringing the garden to life in a truly meaningful way.

We can’t wait to see it in full use!

Taking the Leap: Abseiling for a Brighter Future in Kirklees

abseilers 2026

Stepping over the edge of a 77-metre tower is not something most people would call a normal day—but for seven incredible individuals, it was all part of making a difference.

Recently, a group of brave fundraisers took on the ultimate challenge: abseiling down the iconic Wainhouse Tower in Halifax. Known as the tallest folly in the world, the tower stands at a towering 77 metres high, making it a daunting climb up—and an even more exhilarating descent down.

Together, these seven adventurers raised an incredible £1,500.

That’s £1,500 that will go directly towards supporting disadvantaged children, young people, and families across Kirklees.

Making a Real Impact

At Fresh Futures, we know that behind every donation is an opportunity to change a life. The funds raised from this challenge will help provide vital support—whether that’s through mentoring, youth services, wellbeing support, or creating safe spaces for young people to grow and thrive.

For many of the individuals and families we support, access to the right help at the right time can make all the difference. Fundraising events like this ensure we can continue delivering that support where it’s needed most.

Thank You

To our incredible abseilers: thank you for your courage.
To everyone who donated and supported: thank you for your generosity.

You’ve helped us continue our mission of supporting children, families, and young people across Kirklees—and for that, we are truly grateful.

Taking Fundraising to New Heights for Fresh Futures

Terri on top of the plane for her Wing walk for charity

When it comes to fundraising, some people think outside the box — and some take it to the skies.

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Terri, who took on an unforgettable challenge to support Fresh Futures, raising over £1,000 in the most extraordinary way possible. Terri climbed to the top of a biplane at Headcorn Aerodrome, proving that determination, courage and creativity can make a powerful difference.

Balancing high above the ground, Terri turned an adrenaline‑fuelled experience into real‑world impact. Every pound raised will help Fresh Futures continue its work supporting young people and families, creating opportunities, building confidence and shaping brighter futures within our community.

Fundraising doesn’t have to mean doing the same thing as everyone else. Terri’s challenge shows that when passion meets purpose, incredible things can happen — whether that’s pushing personal limits, trying something new, or stepping far outside your comfort zone.

If Terri’s story has inspired you, there are so many ways to get involved. From sponsored challenges and creative events to adrenaline‑filled experiences of your own, fundraising for Fresh Futures can be as unique as you are.

This is how Nurture in Nature wellbeing event went🌱…

Sometimes the most meaningful change starts with something simple – gloves pulled on, sleeves rolled up, and people coming together with a shared purpose.

volunteer clearing plant beds - Picture by Liz Baker Photography

That was the feeling at Fresh Futures’ Nurture in Nature wellbeing gardening event. What began as an overgrown outdoor space quickly became a place of connection, creativity and care, thanks to the collective efforts of our volunteers, partners and young people.

From the moment people arrived, there was a real sense of togetherness. Some headed straight for the garden beds, getting stuck into weeding and preparing the soil. Others carefully planted new flowers and greenery, imagining how the space would look once the warmer months arrive. There was no rush – just steady work, conversation and the occasional pause to admire progress.

Alongside the gardening, one of the most colourful parts of the day was painting birdhouses. These had been thoughtfully made by students from Brian Jackson College, and volunteers took great care adding bright colours and individual touches. Paintbrushes were swapped, ideas shared, and plenty of laughter followed as each birdhouse took on its own personality.

What made Nurture in Nature truly special was the mix of people involved. Volunteers and colleagues from Arriva, Cummins, Yorkshire Building Society, Switalski Solicitors and UK Greetings worked side by side, joined by Fresh Futures staff and volunteers.

Fresh Futures volunteers and partners sat around the table in the garden

“It’s really nice to give back a little bit…It’s also therapeutic to get outside and get some sunshine…It’s like an oasis of peace in Huddersfield Town centre and it’s lovely to be a part of it” said a volunteer.

By the end of the day, the transformation was clear. What had once felt neglected was now vibrant and welcoming. Freshly planted flowers, cleared beds and colourful birdhouses all told a story of care and collaboration.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part – to our partners, volunteers and the students from Brian Jackson College. Nurture in Nature was more than a gardening event; it was a reminder of the strength of community and the positive impact we can create when we take time to care, connect and grow together. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future!

Our very first Post-16 parents open day

We were proud to welcome our Brian Jackson College parents and carers for a morning of College Post-16 Open Day, and it was wonderful to see so many families attending and engaging with the day.

Parents/Carers and staff at Brian Jackson College

This was the first time we have invited parents to attend an Open Day since the launch of our new Post‑16 provision, and we are pleased to say it will be the first of many more. The event provided an opportunity for parents to explore our facilities, meet staff, and learn more about the provision, support, and pathways available to our students. Visitors were able to ask questions, take part in tours, and gain a clearer insight into how we support young people throughout their learning journey.

We were particularly encouraged by the positive conversations and feedback shared during the day, highlighting the value of opening our doors and strengthening connections with families. The strong turnout also reflected the interest in our programmes and the importance of working closely with parents and carers.
